Water Overflow Monitoring System: A Step Towards Reducing Water Wastage
Recognizing the growing water scarcity issue, I designed a solution to prevent water wastage from overflowing tanks in my locality. The project was motivated by my grandmother's concern about the unnecessary wastage of water that could be utilized by those in need. What began as a simple observation grew into a technical challenge and a community-wide awareness initiative.
Water Overflow Monitoring System Using Arduino
- Problem Identified: I calculated that nearly 3000 liters of water were wasted each month due to overflow from the water tank in my house. This waste could have supplied enough water for five households in a village.
- Technical Solution: I developed an overflow water controller using Arduino, Relay, and Distance Sensors. When the water reached a certain level in the tank, the system would activate and redirect the overflow water to plants nearby.
- Prototype Development:
- The first prototype used jumper wires and a breadboard but was space-consuming and prone to loose connections.
- The second prototype was built on a perforated board and soldered to ensure a compact, reliable design.
- Finally, I encased the system in a weatherproof plastic container, ensuring it was protected from rain, birds, and other environmental factors.
- Outcomes: The system successfully diverted water to plants and significantly reduced waste, resulting in 3000 liters of water saved each month, a resource that could have sustained 5 homes per day in water-scarce areas. It also raised awareness in my community about the importance of managing water resources effectively.
- Maintenance and Testing: I continuously improved the system with feedback from my mentor, testing it on the RB office's tank to ensure flawless operation.
Community Impact and Personal Growth
- Spreading Awareness: I shared the solution with my family, neighbors, and even strangers who took interest in the model. Many were surprised by the simplicity of the system and eager to implement it in their homes.
- Overcoming Challenges: Through this project, I overcame Puberphonia, a speech disorder that had held me back for years. Engaging with people about my solution helped me regain my confidence, speak more openly, and share my ideas.
- Personal Achievement: This project was not just about solving a water issue but also about proving to myself and my community that I could create solutions with meaningful impact. It strengthened my problem-solving skills, technical expertise, and willingness to tackle environmental challenges head-on.
By preventing water wastage and empowering others with the knowledge to do the same, this project was a step towards more responsible water management at the local level.
